  1. There has been upheaval on the social media over President Muhammadu Buhari plan to replace Yemi Osinbajo with another candidate as his running mate for the 2019 presidential election.

A source in APC has said the president from his body language is already looking beyond Osinbajo because he knows Osinbajo’s loyalty lies with Tinubu.

The Daily Independent citing a close source in the All Progressives Congress (APC) reported that the possibility of Osinbajo running on a joint ticket with Buhari in 2019 is very remote because of the close ties the vice-president has with Bola Tinubu.

The source said the president from his body language is already looking beyond Osinbajo because he knows Osinbajo’s loyalty lies with Tinubu.

He named the minister of solid minerals Kayode Fayemi and a former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu as likely replacements for Osinbajo.

However, Nigerians have begun faulting Buhari’s alleged plan to swap Osinbajo for another candidate.

Some have also faulted the choice Orji Uzor Kalu as vice-president of the country, citing his corruption as a hindrance.

  2. FG to reform regulatory, community relations matters in the oil industry- Kachikwu On December 5, 2016 News, The Minister for State Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu said that the Federal Government will eliminate multiplicity of regulators, as well as eliminate activities of international oil Companies, IOCs, that provoke community agitations.
Speaking through his Senior Technical Adviser on Fiscal and Regulatory Matters, Dr. Tim Okon, at the International Health Safety and Environment (HSE) event in Lagos, Kachikwu also stated that a memoranda of understanding, MOUs, will be worked out between the Department of Petroleum Resources, DPR, and the Federal Ministry of Environment and its agencies. He stated: “The temporary economic situation notwithstanding, the Ministry, through the DPR, is set to emplace sanctions and deterrent charges on avoidable pollution and discharges, while the sustenance of the no-compensation policy on willful damages to oil and gas facilities will be accorded higher priority.” Dr. Ibe KachikwuDr. Ibe Kachikwu “The deployment of relevant security technologies is currently being considered, such as facilities and pipeline aerial surveillance. “The path of dialogue is perpetually opened to all relevant stakeholders and to the host communities in particular, in addition to the established avenues for receiving their routine complaints and petitions against any licensed operators.” He expressed regret that the sustained vandalism of production facilities has led to several shut-ins and deferments. This he said has drastically declined the country’s oil production and export figures, with concomitant economic losses and reduction in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the nation. Also speaking, Director, Department of Petroleum Resources, Mr. Mordecai Ladan said that the sector in the past decade had witnessed increased activities due to the federal government’s policy and action plan to increase daily production to four million barrels and national reserves to 40 billion barrels by 2020. He stressed that, the hike in militancy activities, poses great challenge not only to the federal government but also to oil companies’ work force and host communities.

  3. ARSENE WENGER URGED ARSENAL DOU TO THINK BIG.
    By:oyiboruno Paul.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has urged
Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil to think
about more than money when signing new contracts.
The duo are currently in negotiations with the Gunners over new deals, with their current contracts of £180,000 a week running out at the end of next season.
With both Sanchez and Ozil demanding a £250,000 weekly, but the club is willing to offer just £200,000 to their star men.
However, Wenger insists that this is
normal, and that the club is in negotiations with both players over new deals.'The luxury in the modern game should be that it is not only about money. Players make good money wherever,’ the frenchman said.
players should be more concern about silver wares other than money.Arsenal currently seats second in the EPL table three points behind leaders Chelsea, and face a tough trip to Basel in midweek Uefa champions league encounter.
We are in negotiations, yes, because the players are one-and-a-half years away in their current contract.but for now we are focus on our games.
This may not be what some arsenal fans are keen to hear, with many supporters urging the club to splash the cash to keep their best players at the Emirates.
However, they may have to take heart from the fact that their manager is yet to be panicked over the ongoing situation at the Emirate as has always believes in the philosophy that he can keep his star players.
Many years ago he had this same philosophy which allows star men like fabregas,Alex song, robin van persie,Alexander Hleb, mattiu flamini, and vermalean to depart to Emirate.so,the supporters therefore urged the club to splash the cash to keep their star men if they are to compete at all front. ...

  7. BUHARI HAS BROUGHT NOTHING GOOD BUT HARDSHIP TO NIGERIANS - PDPNYF DECRY

    By: Ikikiru Akpobome Peace

The People's Democratic Party Youth Frontier, PDPNYF, has accused President Muhammad Buhari of inflicting hardship on Nigerians with the lack of viable economic and political will ushered in by his administration to drive the Nation out of recession he plunged the Country into.

The National Coordinator of the PDP Youth Body, Comrade Okai Usman, yesterday in a statement, accused Buhari of being insensitive towards the Plight of Nigerians and introduced dubious tariffs since coming to power to deliberately punish Nigerians.

Comrade Okai, added that "from Fuel Pump Price increment to Electricity Tariff which was increased by 80%, to the numerous ridiculous Bank charges, and the planned increment on Phone Calls and Data Tariff, with the aim of inflicting more hardship on Nigerians". He opined that Buhari's economic policy has Led to loss of millions of jobs and has magnificently increased poverty in the Country.

The PDPNYF Opposition Group, decried that Government which promised the people Change are now seeking ways to Chain the ways and means of the very people that voted them into power.

The Group, lamented that the Buhari Led administration had made Naira to lost its Value, stressing that the suffering in Nigeria today is as a result of Buhari's poor economic policies and the inability of the President to seek help where necessary; Adding that the APC is not well prepared for Leadership tussle.

The PDP Youth Group, call on the Current administration of Buhari and the APC to show pity on Nigerians.

The Youth Group, commend Nigerian's Senate for outright rejection of the proposed plans by the APC and Buhari to increase Phone Calls and Data Price service.

The Group also applaud The Trade Union Congress, TUC, for kicking against the data tariff hike by the Federal Government. According to the TUC President, Comrade Bobbi Bola Kaigama and Acting Secretary General, Comrade (Barr.) Simeso Amachness, noted that "It is very unfortunate, very unreasonable and inhuman to come up with such idea at a period of recession"; Adding that "any call for increase in anything for now is most unreasonable, uncalled for and calculated attempt to record more Suicide Cases and insecurity in our already tension soaked Country".

Corps member plants 6,000 economic trees to tackle climate change
    ON December 6, 2016 12:24 PM /
    IN News / Comments
A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member serving in Ebonyi, Godshield Kanjal has started planting of over 6,000 economic trees across the state.
The trees include orange, bush mango, guava, oil palm, avocado pear, cashew, among others.
Kanjal, who hails from Cross River, stated that the exercise was aimed at tackling the effect of climate change and reducing poverty among the populace.
He remarked that he was putting to practice the contents of various global resolutions on climate change, when the exercise took off from Achara Community School, Ugwu-Achara.
“It is pertinent for stakeholders to implement such resolutions, especially at the grassroots where the climate change effects are mostly felt.
“These effects include global warming threats on the environment, intense rainfall, flood, severe and frequent heat waves, among others,” he said.
The corps member said that he would dedicate his one-year service period to tackling the effects of climate change on the environment.
“This project is part of my personal Community Development Service (CDS), a cardinal programme of NYSC aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of environmental sustainability.
“Planting of these trees in private homes, public properties and on roadsides help absorb the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and also reduce poverty in the society,” he said.
Kanjal thanked individuals who sponsored the project in spite of the harsh economic conditions and pleaded for more support in executing the project in 2017.
“I solicit for enhanced enlightenment of Nigerians by various tiers of government and other stakeholders on the impact of climate change and ways of mitigating them.
“It baffles me to see several fertile lands uncultivated as planting of economic trees have immense economic benefits with prevailing high unemployment rate in the country.
“I urge every teacher, pupil, students among others to plant at least one economic tree as arrangements have been made broadcast enlightenment programmes on the issue in both English and Ibo languages,” he said.
The Head Mistress of the school, Mrs Agnes Orji commended Kanjal for the project and urged other corps members and individuals in various sectors to emulate him.
“The school management and teachers have indicated interest in your project and pledge to plant economic trees at their homes and farms.
“The practice will enable us fight poverty and we ask the government to provide improved species of economic trees at affordable rates to the people, for planting,” she said.
The Commissioner for Environment, Chief Moses Ogodo-Ali lauded the corps member’s initiative and promised to support the project.
“The task of protecting the environment should not be left for the government alone as we shall always collaborate with individuals and groups in actualising this objective,” he said.
The NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs Gladys Mbachi extolled Kanjal for his passion to touch lives in his host community, in spite of the prevailing economic downturn.
Mbachi represented by the Abakaliki Local Government Inspector of NYSC, Mr Ngwoke Nwokoro urged Kanjal to sustain the project and sought for collaboration from relevant stakeholders in such regard.

  12. NHRC to probe murder of Benue lecturer
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is to probe the murder of Wilfred Aondosoo Tondo, a lecturer with the University of Mkar, Benue State, it was learnt.
NHRC’s Executive Secretary, Prof Bem Angwe, spoke in Abuja yesterday while receiving a petition from relatives of the deceased, led by their lawyer, S.A. Orkumah.
The petitioners alleged that powerful individuals in the state were planning to cover up the case.
They queried the role of the attorney general in the release of those arrested for the murder.
“There are strong political forces trying to thwart prosecution of the suspects, despite the overwhelming evidence linking them to the murder.
“It is clear from the above facts that a script is being played out by the Office of the AG.
“The innocent blood of the deceased and his family is crying for justice, while some political forces are out to scuttle justice,” the petition said.
Prof. Angwe assured the protesters the NHRC would unravel the mystery behind the murder.
“We will look into this petition and work within our powers to address the issues you have raised. I assure you of our commitment to ensuring the rights of Nigerians are respected and the law allowed to take its course, no matter who is concerned,” Angwe said.

The Igbo race has been called upon never to accept defeat of any kind as they remain survivals during and after the civil war. Rather, they should rise up and move forward.
This was the submission of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stalwart and woman activist, Onyeka Onwenu at launch of “The Land of my Birth,” a book written by Abraham Nnadi in Lagos recently.
Onwenu said that apart from the book provoking a nostalgia feeling for those of them who witnessed the war, the book was of particular interest to Ndigbo.
She said: “Land of my Birth is a book that provokes nostalgia feelings. As a people, we read about ourselves, what we went through during the civil war and thereafter.
“But, particularly, the book speaks to Ndigbo of what we had gone through and have continued to go through in this country. We are never a people that will accept defeat. Having gone through hardship and deprivation, we have remained stronger. So, as survivals, Ndigbo the world over should rise up and just keep going forward.“
The former Executive Director, National Centre for Women Development also called for a female president in Nigeria. She said women if given the opportunity can heal and nurture the world.

A major milestone in the resolve of Nigeria to crush Boko Haram terrorists in the North East was achieved, yesterday, with the delivery of four fighter aircraft to the Nigerian government by its Pakistani counterpart.
This came ahead of 21 aircraft approved for procurement by President Muhammadu Buhari to boost the operations of the Nigerian Air Force.
The 21 war planes approved for procurement by the Buhari administration, which delivery are expected by the first quarter of next year, are four helicopters gunships, four medium airlift utility helicopters, three live attack aircraft and ten primary trainers.
The four Super Mushshak aircraft, said to be modernized for modern warfare, delivered to the Nigerian Air Force, yesterday, also arrived ahead of ten others which the Nigerian government asked the Asian country to manufacture and subsequently sell to it for use in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the North East.
The four war aircraft donated to Nigeria are meant to train Nigerian Airforce pilots on how to operate the war planes expected for delivery by the first quarter of 2017.
Besides donation of the four aircraft , the government of Pakistan also deployed pilots, engineers and other maintenance crews to guide the Nigerian users pending delivery of the others purchased.
The aircraft which were handed over to the Nigerian Air Force by the Pakistani Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sohail Aman, were in fulfillment of agreements reached by the two countries when Nigeria placed order for the ten expected war planes.
Speaking at the handing, taking over and induction ceremony of the four Super Mushshak aircraft into the Nigerian Air Force fleet, at the 401 Flight Training School, Kaduna, the Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, said the development had repositioned the Nigerian Air Force to carry out its role not only in the ongoing counter insurgency operations in the North East but also respond positively to security threats in some parts of the country.
The Air Force boss, who heaped praises on President Muhammadu Buhari for his prompt response to the operational needs of his security outfit, disclosed that so far, 20 aircraft have been purchased and added to the Air Force fleet since assumption of office of the president, a development he said, was a far departure from the past.
He said: “I would like to specially thank Mr President for his continues support and consistent commitment to the development of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
” I want to put it on record today that the Nigerian Air Force has fared well since Mr President’s assumption of leadership as our Commander-In-Chief. As as result, the Nigerian Air Force is now strategically positioned into our highly disciplined and professional force through capacity building initiative for effective and efficient employment of firepower in response to Nigerian national security challenges but has also initiated the procurement of new modern platform to boost its capabilities and the resolve to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges.
“The Nigerian Air Force has made tremendous improvement in terms of reactivation, training and enhancement of the welfare of its personnel.
“In the area of platform reactivation, the Nigerian Air Force has restored 15 air planes and helicopters into flying status in the last 17 months.
“Efforts are also at advanced stage to reactivate four additional air planes that will be deployed very soon for operations.
“It is our hope that by the first quarter of 2017, the Nigerian Air Force would have 21 additional new platforms in its fleet.

    Adelani Adepegba, Abuja

Four weeks after the police launched an investigation into the sexual exploitation and abuses of internally displaced persons at IDP camps in the North-East, the probe has yet to be concluded.

Our correspondent also learnt on Sunday that the special investigation panel set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, on November 2, 2016 had not arrested the culprits fingered in the abuses as reported by the Human Rights Watch.

The HRW had in its report accused camp officials, vigilance groups, soldiers and policemen of engaging in sexual harassment of women and teenagers in the IDP camps in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states.

Shocked by the allegations, President Muhammadu Buhari, had directed the IG and the state governments to carry out a thorough investigation into the incidents.

It was gathered that the investigators had interrogated some camp officials and security personnel on duty at the various IDP camps to establish their involvement in the crime.

It was learnt that the investigators may take longer to conclude the probe in order to do a thorough job.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Donald Awunah, confirmed that the investigators had not completed the task within the given timeline, noting that they could not rush it because they needed to do a thorough job.

He said, “The investigation into the sexual abuses at IDP camps is ongoing, the investigators have yet to conclude because they needed to carry out a thorough and professional investigation.

“Investigations of such nature take time because you need to speak with the IDPs, eye-witnesses and others and some of them may have relocated. The time given to them (investigators) was just a guide.”

  19. FG bans importation of vehicles through land borders
    December 6, 2016

From next month, importation of vehicles through the land borders will be prohibited, according to a new prohibition order issued by the Federal Government to that effect. The prohibition order covers all new and used vehicles.

A statement issued on Monday by the Nigeria Customs Service indicated that the ban was sequel to a presidential directive restricting all vehicle imports to the seaports with effect from January 1, 2017.

The restriction on importation of vehicles follows that of rice, whose imports through the land borders had been banned since April 2016.

In the statement signed by its spokesperson, Mr. Wale Adeniyi, the NCS advised importers of vehicles through the land borders to utilise the grace period up till December 31 to clear their vehicles landed in neighbouring countries’ ports.

The Federal Government had disclosed at a forum of the automotive industry on Friday that it would ban the importation of vehicles through land borders and enforce the presentation of roadworthiness certificates on such vehicles from their countries of origin before allowing them into Nigeria.

The Director-General, National Automotive Design and Development Council, Mr. Aminu Jalal, who said this on behalf of the government, added that it was a means of controlling the influx of used vehicles, popularly called ‘Tokunbo’, into the country.

Stakeholders in the automotive industry had earlier called for strict regulation of the importation of vehicles, noting that poor implementation of the auto policy introduced in the last quarter of 2013 by former President Goodluck Jonathan administration was driving down the volume of their products.

The auto policy prescribed the imposition of 70 per cent tariff on imported cars, both old and new ones.

While importers of new cars are currently paying 70 per cent of the cost of the vehicles as import duty

  20. Russia says OPEC, non-OPEC countries to discuss oil cuts
      |   06 December 2016   |   10:24 am

Russia’s energy ministry said Tuesday that OPEC and non-OPEC members would meet in Vienna Saturday following a decision to cut global oil output.

The ministry told AFP that Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak would be taking part in the meeting, which comes after Moscow said it was ready to reduce crude output by 300,000 barrels a day in the first half of 2017.

After months of disagreement, OPEC members last week hammered out a deal to cut oil output for the first time in eight years.

The agreement ended weeks of uncertainty and volatility on crude markets as the key players bickered over who would shoulder the biggest burden of the cuts.
Oil prices shot up on the announcement, which was more ambitious than many analysts had expected.

Prices reached a 16-month high over OPEC’s announcement of the meeting late Monday but quickly dipped overnight as the lustre of OPEC’s decision to cut production faded.

On Tuesday at 0830 GMT, US benchmark West Texas Intermediate was down 39 cents on the day at $51.40, while Brent North Sea crude had dropped 31 cents to $54.63.

With crude prices above $50 dollars, US shale oil producers are dusting off dormant oil rigs as they gear up to raise production which could lessen the impact of any OPEC cuts.

“The price action speaks to me of a market that lacks conviction and momentum,” said OANDA senior market analyst Jeffrey Halley.

“As reality bites in a world awash with oil, producing countries will have to show some meaningful backbone on compliance, for probably the first time ever, to achieve the meaningful rally in oil prices that they so desire.”

Some analysts say that last week’s deal will likely be finalised at Saturday’s meeting but doubts over its implementation remain.

Banker accused of N8 billion currency scam accuses EFCC of frustrating plea bargain
    December 6, 2016Agency Report

Justice Nathaniel Ayo-Emmanuel of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, has adjourned till December 14 hearing on the plea bargain arrangement between a banker, Tope Akintade, and the EFCC in the case of alleged N8 billion CBN currency scam.
Mr. Akintade’s counsel, Femi Edema, at Tuesday’s hearing accused the anti-graft body of deliberately frustrating his client’s efforts on the plea bargain arrangement.
Mr. Edema told the court that the EFCC Head Office in Abuja had initially certified that all the necessary processes of the plea bargain concerning his client had been completed.
The counsel also lamented the worsening health condition of his client and prayed the court for a short hearing date.
But the prosecutor, Sola Obaribirin, submitted that the plea bargain processes were yet to be fully completed.
He, however, gave an assurance that all necessary steps would be taken for the plea bargain deal to be sealed before the next adjourned date.
The prosecutor further stated that the commission was determined to combine all the plea bargain processes and hearings at once instead of considering them in bits.
Justice Ayo-Emmanuel consequently adjourned the case, which was earlier slated for hearing, over the inability of Mr. Akintade and EFCC to conclude all processes involved in the plea bargain arrangement.

Meanwhile, the bail application filed by Adeola Olaniyan, the fifth accused person, was refused and struck out.
The court held that the reasons for the bail were not cogent and convincing enough.
R.M. Bature, the counsel to Olaniyan, had told the court that the health condition of his client was worsening.
The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that Patient Okoro, Johnson Afolabi, Ibrahim Ilori, Philip Togun, Kolawole Babalola and Fatai Yusuf, along with others, had been standing trial since 2015.
They are facing trial over multiple charges bordering on conspiracy, forgery, theft and recirculation of mutilated N8 billion currencies at the Ibadan branch of CBN.

  24. Nigeria's Soyinka hits back at 'imbeciles' in green card row

Lagos - Nobel prize-winning author Wole Soyinka hit back Monday at critics from his native Nigeria, denouncing the "slugs, barbarians and imbeciles" who derided him for tearing up his US residency card after Donald Trump's election win.
"I don't want people we fought for to have the freedom of expression to use it for stupid comments", Woyinka told journalists in Lagos.
Soyinka, who regularly teaches at top US universities, made good on a pledge to bin his green card in the event of a Trump victory, in protest at the Republican's anti-immigration stance.
But after the news was reported on Friday, Nigerians fired up their Twitter feeds, simultaneously blaming the playwright and poet for his distance from his fellow countrymen, and demanding proof that he actually went through with it.
"I beg did you see him throw it away?" asked one Twitter writer, while another claimed: "(I won't believe it) 'til no video and no photo...."
"Why didn't he give it to me!" said yet another.
    Death of Nigeria common sense
Many commentators accused Soyinka of being disconnected from the plight of Nigeria's 180 million citizens, many of whom dream of the comforts of US life with its educational and economic opportunities, reliable electricity and freedoms.
Soyinka, one of Africa's most famous writers and rights activists, was jailed in 1967 for 22 months during Nigeria's civil war, or Biafra war. He won the Nobel prize in 1986.
He fled into exile in the United States in 1994 and was sentenced to death for treason by the military leader Sani Abacha. He has since spent much time teaching at US universities, including Harvard, Cornell and Yale.
To reply to the barrage of criticism on Twitter, Soyinka invited journalists to a discussion held on Monday in Freedom Park, a former slaves' prison transformed into a site for freedom of expression.
"On the (Trump's) inauguration day, I will mourn," he said.
"You know what I will be mourning? The death of Nigeria common sense. I feel we have lost it. Sometimes I am embarrassed to share the same nation space with imbeciles."...

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says it will soon pay players and officials of the Super Falcons all their entitlements for winning the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON).
A statement by NFF’s Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, quoted the Federation’s General Secretary, Mohammed Sanusi, as saying the money for this was however not available at the moment.
“The Federation is not happy about owing players and coaches. But it can only continue to seek their understanding and those of hoteliers and travel agents, as well as its management and staff until the situation improves.
“There is no gainsaying in the fact that there is a severe economic challenge in the country now and all organisations, whether government or private, are feeling the pinch. But, it is not government’s doing.
“We know we have financial commitment to the players and officials of Super Falcons, and we have not at any time stated otherwise. But the money is not readily available at the moment.
“I appeal to them to understand the situation of the Federation, to understand the situation of the country at the present and exercise patience.
    Super Falcons in Cameroon
“We will pay them all monies they are being owed as soon as we receive same from government, just as we paid the national under-17 team’s players and officials who won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile last year, after the tournament.
“Just as we paid coach Samson Siasia’s wages as soon as we had the funds after the Olympics.’’
Sanusi also recalled that the Super Eagles were owed monies for the match against Tanzania and were paid when funds for that match were made available by government.
“We still owe the Super Eagles for the matches against Zambia and Algeria, but the memos have gone to government and are being looked at.
“But we must commend the Minister of Sports, Solomon Dalung, who has been energetically pushing the cases of the various national teams.
“We have sent the memo for the Women Africa Cup of Nations in October and it is being processed as we speak.”
Sanusi stated that NFF had meanwhile embarked on an aggressive drive to find a permanent solution to the issue of owing players and coaches.
He also stated that corporate players were now listening to the NFF’s leadership and the Federation’s finances would soon improve.
“We are also working to get monies outstanding from former sponsors of the national teams, to complement what we are expecting from government.
“In relation to all these, we are in the process of sorting out our TSA domiciliary accounts so that we can receive our due grants from FIFA and CAF, including the $80,000 prize money from the AWCON, once it is available.’’
The NFF General Secretary also appealed to media representatives to understand the plight of the Federation, and temper their write-ups with some understanding.
“This morning, I was reading a report that the Federation is yet to pay the Super Falcons one kobo. That is not correct.
‘“While the team was in Cameroon, the NFF sourced for money from one of our sponsors and paid the players N500,000 each and also paid the technical crew and backroom staff.
“Our friends in the media should make the effort to clarify whatever information they have before going to press.’’
While applauding the Falcons for their tenacity and total dedication to duty in Cameroon in spite of low morale, Sanusi confirmed that a reception would soon be held for them.
“NFF is waiting for word from government to know when the African champions will be hosted to a state reception.
“The reception for the senior women national team is out of our hands. We are waiting on the Federal Government and as soon as we have confirmation of the date, we will inform the players and officials to regroup in Abuja,” he stated.
The Falcons won the 10 AWCON on Saturday in Yaounde by beating hosts Cameroon 1-0 for their eighth continental title.

  26. Nigerian drug convict, Nwoko jailed 27yrs in Cambodia loses reprieve

A Nigerian drug convict in Cambodia, Precious Chineme Nwoko has had his hope for reprieve dashed.
Nwoko, also known as Precious Max and linked with several Australian women arrested for being his mules, was sentenced to 27 years imprisonment in 2014.
His hope for reprieve was dashed by a Cambodian appeals court on Tuesday.
Precious Chineme Nwoko, centre, being taken away from court in Cambodia on Tuesday
The court upheld his prison term, ruling that it was appropriate and in accordance with Cambodia law.
The court also upheld the prison terms slammed on a Frenchwoman, and Australian.
The trio were all convicted for trying to smuggle heroin to Australia.
Judge Pol Sam Ouen said the sentences given by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court in May 2014 to then-19-year-old Frenchwoman Charlene Savarino, 41-year-old Ann Yoshe Taylor of Australia and 23-year-old Precious Nwoko of Nigeria were correct.
The lower court had sentenced Savarino to 25 years in prison, Taylor to 23 years and Nwoko to 27 years.
Savarino and Taylor were arrested in September 2013 at Phnom Penh International Airport after police found 2.2 kilograms (4.8 pounds) of heroin in Taylor’s luggage as they prepared to fly together to Australia.
Nwoko, Savarino’s boyfriend, was believed to have masterminded the smuggling and asked Savarino to make the arrangements.
Cambodia is not a major producer of illegal drugs but has increasingly become a smuggling transit route.
Khieu Vann, the lawyer for Taylor, told reporters that the appeals court’s decision was an injustice and that he would consult with his client to see if she wished to appeal to the Supreme Court.
Asked today by journalists why he used dating scams to turn women into drug mules, Nwoko became enraged, according to a report by Australia’s Sydney Morning Herald
“Are you stupid? Get out of here. You think you can come here and ask questions while I am jail,” he shouted at Luke McMahon, a Melbourne writer who has revealed Taylor’s plight in an exclusive story for Fairfax Media.
Nwoko, who is known as Precious Max, had posed as a successful South African businessman in Phnom Penh when he befriended Taylor on the internet. She became romantically involved with him after he had paid for her airfare to Cambodia.
On September 18, 2013, Nwoko asked Taylor, who was due to fly back to Australia, to take a backpack full of samples for an arts and crafts business in which he claimed to have an involvement.
She hadn’t made it to the check-in counter when police swooped and found about two kilograms of heroin in the backpack.
    Nwoko was arrested soon after.
Australian police are investigating a growing number of internet scams targeting Australians in south-east Asian countries, including Cambodia, where Nwoko is believed to be still operating scams, from his jail cell, targeting Australian women.

MOSOP mulls reassessment of polluted sites in Ogoniland.

Citing delay in the implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) report on Ogoniland, the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) is contemplating reassessing the polluted sites to determine the extent of their contamination.
To this end, the movement is to meet with indigenes on the governing council of the Hydrocarbon Pollution Restoration Project (HYPREP) for proper briefing.
The spokesperson to MOSOP president, Bari-ara Kpalap, who spoke with The Guardian, said: “The UNEP report was submitted in 2011. It is almost six years and there is no way the situation in 2011 will remain same. What it means is that the level of contamination is far higher now. And that means that there is need for a reassessment of the area to determine the exact state of pollution.”
He regretted that the communities were still drinking contaminated water after the global agency had certified presence of hydrocarbon and benzene due to helpnessness.
“The Ogoni people are deeply worried that nothing is happening concerning this whole clean-up exercise, especially after the flag-off had been concluded. They are disturbed that the pollution is not abating. You can imagine what is happening to our health and survival. We are deeply worried that we are not seeing anything on ground to indicate that the implementation has actually begun,” he lamented.
Kpalap went on: “Our survival has been compromised as a result of this delay. Our underground and surface waters remain contaminated, yet we do not have an alternative. We are drinking the contaminated water. The consequence is that we are dying and suffering ailments.”
He revealed that land had been made available for the establishment of the Centre of Excellence and Soil Management, one of the key recommendations of the report.
Kpalap added that the governing council of HYPREP was to pick a suitable location for the centre.

Wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo has urged Nigerians to consciously show compassion for the bereaved in order to save them further emotional harm.
Osinbajo, who spoke in Lagos at the official launch of EHIBAM GriefShare Foundation, to help lessen the burden of the bereaved, explained that a new normal life for these Nigerians can only be guaranteed through compassion, care and love of the people around them.
    Osinbajo
The Foundation was instituted in honour of the late son of Pastor Modupeola Irele, Mr. Ehisieme Osarieme Alonge who died at the age of 35 after a brief illness.
“During the period of bereavement, individuals need support and proper counselling to be able to overcome the burden of the grief.
“We live in an environment where emotions are concealed and many Nigerians are going through such situation now. This time they have no one to talk to and counselling is a practical way to guide them through normal life,” Osinbajo stated.
Earlier, Founder of Vivian Fowler Memorial College for Girls, Dr. Leila Fowler who chaired the occasion, narrated how grief can be used to turn around other people’s lives, using the death of her daughter as an example saying it informed the establishment of Fowler Memorial College.

ABUJA – CHRISTIAN Youths in Nigeria, yesterday, berated Governor El-Rufai of Kaduna State over his claim that attackers of Christians in Southern Kaduna were from outside the country.

Consequently, they called on the State House of Assembly to commence impeachment process against governor El-Rufai for conniving with terrorists to kill Nigerians.

Malam Nasir El-Rufai had last week condemned President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Rev. Supo Ayokunle for describing the killing as religion cleansing, claiming the killers were ‘foreigners’.

A statement by the National President Youth Wing of C.A.N, Engr Daniel Kadzai, in Abuja, said it was unfortunate that the Governor is shielding the perpetrators and paying them compensation at the expense of the victims.

  34. Nigeria’s 1200 legislators may escape criminal, civil prosecution for four years
Nigeria’s battle to exit the league of corrupt nations will suffer a setback as the Senate plans to amend the 1999 Constitution to protect lawmakers from all criminal and civil cases.
Civil society organisations yesterday warned that the proposal could erode confidence in the law, especially in the eyes of the global community that sees Nigeria’s political class as being ‘fantastically corrupt.’
They expressed the concern that with such immunity for all lawmakers at national and state levels, legislators will now be able to blatantly ask for bribes with impunity.
Immunity for Nigeria’s more than 1200 lawmakers at federal and state levels of government means they will escape criminal and civil prosecution for at least four years if the Senate succeeds in altering any part of the constitution for this purpose.
The Guardian obtained the Senate Bill number 342 yesterday and found that it has already been gazzetted and being given accelerated legislative processing.
The main objective of the amendment is to ensure that leaders and members of the legislature — particularly National and State Assemblies — are not subjected to any form of prosecution or legal persecution on account of their actions or statements in the course of carrying out their legislative functions.
Those opposed to the amendment, however, expressed the fear that it could be misconstrued to mean, “The Bill is simply seeking to give the presiding officers of the Senate protection against being prosecuted for their alleged involvement in the Senate rules forgery case.”
It was learnt that the body of Principal Officers of the National Assembly was able to clear the way for the amendment following the withdrawal of the Senate forgery suit by the office of the Attorney General of the Federation last October.
In withdrawing the suit against Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu last October, the Ministry of Justice filed an application to amend the charges and attached the amended charges. In the new charges, only the former Clerk of the National Assembly, Mr. Salisu Maikasuwa, and a former deputy clerk, Mr. Ben Efeturi, were listed as accused persons.
Saraki and Ekweremadu had been charged alongside Maikasuwa and Efeturi for alleged forgery of the Senate Standing Orders, an action that was simply described as political persecution of the Senate President who is also being tried by the Code of Conduct Tribunal for alleged false asset declaration in 2001.
Sponsored by Senator Solomon Olamilekan, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) representing Lagos East Senatorial District in the Senate, the constitution amendment bill is aimed at strengthening “our democratic institutions (The Legislature) by guaranteeing the freedom of speech and protection of members of Parliament over words spoken and actions taken in the normal course of legislative business.”
Specifically, the bill seeks to amend Section 56 of the Constitution by adding new Sub-Sections which read: “No civil or criminal proceedings may be instituted against any member of the Senate or the House of Representatives in respect or words spoken before that House or a Committee thereof or in respect of words written in a report to that House or to any Committee thereof or in any petition, bill, resolution, motion or question brought or introduced by him therein.”
Further additions proposed by the bill reads: “No civil or criminal proceedings may be instituted against the President of the Senate or Speaker of the House of Representatives or any officer of the National Assembly in respect of an Act carried out in compliance with a resolution of the House or the exercise or any power conferred on or vested in him by the Standing Orders or the House or by the Constitution.”

Deceased Kano ‘corper’ had untreated infection –NYSC
    Friday Olokor, Abuja
Late Ifedolapo Oladepo, a corps member of the 2016 Batch ‘B’, who died at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Kano, had renal sepsis occasioned by infection, a report that was conducted has revealed.
From the result of investigation, the doctor concluded that the deceased “had kidney infection, probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.”
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung and Director General of the NYSC, Brig-General Suleiman Kazaure, while presenting the report on Tuesday in Abuja, reiterated the government’s commitment to safety of corps members.
The PUNCH reports that three corps members had recently died during the on-going 2016 Batch ‘B’ (Stream I) orientation programme.
They are Chinyerum Nwenenda Elechi, Ifedolapo Oladepo and Monday Asuquo Ukeme, deployed to Bayelsa, Kano and Zamfara states respectively.
But the death of Oladepo, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, had been generating ripples, with family members accusing NYSC of negligence.
While presenting the report of the committee set up to unravel the immediate and remote causes of their deaths, Kazaure attributed Ifedolapo Oladepo’s death to her “refusal to disclose an ailment she had been battling with before resuming to camp.”
He said, “It is clear that the deceased had an ailment which she did not disclose. From the doctors’ report, the corps member died of renal sepsis occasioned by infection.
“Even, to the untrained, kidney infections do not develop and degenerate to the level of mortality in three days (i.e 7th to 29th November, 2016).
“The deceased first appeared at the camp clinic with complaints of headache and fever, which she said she had been experiencing for two days.
“On examination, the doctors on duty noticed rashes on her legs, which she claimed started appearing as a result of her use of a second-hand knickers she bought without first washing it.
“Doctors noticed increase in the rashes on her legs, the deceased still dismissed it as a reaction to usage of a second-hand knicker. By this time, she had been vomiting. Therefore, she was admitted at the camp clinic and treated with Drazamol injection and Piriton to soothe her body pains as she was already on malaria drugs.”
The NYSC DG added that the deceased was immediately referred to Gwarzo General Hospital for further treatment, where, after examination, “the doctor concluded that the deceased had kidney infection probably due to untreated urinary tract infection.”
According to him, Oladepo gave up the ghost after she had been stabilised for the long journey to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital for immediate dialysis.
He said, “The investigation showed that the deceased responded well until about 2:00am on 29th November when her condition worsened, and her body began to show noticeable signs of fluid retention.
“She was thereafter placed on oxygen as the doctors battled to stabilise her for the long journey to Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.”

FEMALE IDPS ABUSE :10 SUSPECTS ARRESTED

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr Ibrahim Idris, said two policemen, three Soldiers, one prison official, one Air Force personnel, a staff of Borno Ministry for Agriculture and two members of the Civilian JTF had been arrested for alleged abuse of IDPs. The Human Rights Watch in its report, had accused the Police, Nigerian Army, vigilante groups and camp leaders of raping young girls and women in various IDPs camps.

Following the report, the I-G set up a special investigation panel to investigate the cases. Idris made the disclosure at the Inspector-General of Police Conference in Abuja on Tuesday. He said that the police would liase with the Army and Air Force to make their men available for a thorough investigation. Idris said that after the investigation, any suspects found guilty of the offence would be dismissed and taken to court for prosecution. “We are going to conduct a thorough investigation and if anyone is found guilty we will dismiss him then take him to court,”he said. He said that the police had put in place some mechanisms, including the deployment of female police officers to IDPs camp to check future occurrences. President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered the I-G and the affected state governors to investigate the allegation. On the Rivers re-run election, Idris said that the force had begun the deployment of personnel to the state for peaceful and fair election. He said that there was need for collaboration between other sister agencies for the election. Idris, who declined to comment on the alleged withdrawal of the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to Gov. Nyisome Wike of Rivers, said the police had good working relationship with all the 36 state governors. He advised state commissioners of police to ensure that Nigerians were not subjected to hardships on the roads during the Yuletide. “You should ensure that no hardship is created for citizens of Nigeria, try and ease movements on the roads,” he said.

  38. Kogi NUJ condemns journalist arrest by DSS, protest
    By EZEEKULIE CHIBUIKE JOHN

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kogi chapter on Monday
directed journalists in the state to abstain from government activities to
protest the unlawful arrest of one of its member, Mr Friday
    Ogungbemi.

The directive was contained in a communiqué issued in Lokoja
after an emergency congress meeting following failure of all
entreaties to the state government and Department of the State
Services (DSS) to secure the release of Ogungbemi.

The Communiqué said that Ogungbemi, a publisher, was arrested
by agents of the (DSS) on Wednesday night over alleged offensive
publication in the November 23 – December 15, 2016 edition of the
    Policy and Lawmakers magazine.
“In view of the gross abuse of office by the DSS, probably acting
on the directive of some highly placed groups or individuals,
journalists should indefinitely boycott the coverage of all
government activities in the state”, the union directed.

According to the communiqué, the union views the action of
the journalist who was arrested on November 30, at his residence in
Lokoja as an affront on the constitution of the Federal Republic of
Nigeria and the 1948 United Nations Human Rights Charter.
“The NUJ noted with dismay, the ordeal of the publisher as well
as the psychological trauma being experienced by his family.

The NUJ in the communiqué noted that the action of the law
enforcement agency was an attempt to thwart the efforts of the media
in the state and as well, limits the press from performing its
function as watchdog of the society. And also call on the DSS, Kogi
State, to secure release of Mr Friday without further delay, as his arrest
amounts to abuse of his fundamental Human Rights.

The congress also appeal that a legal action be taken against the
DSS with a view to enforcing the fundamental rights of the confined
journalist and as well, claim damages for his unlawful
    arrest and detention.

Naira’s depreciation threatens adoption of ECOWAS single currency.

ABUJA —THE Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has said the full adoption of a single currency was currently under threat due to the steady decline of Nigeria’s currency, the Naira.
ECOWAS had set 2020 as the year to achieve the adoption of a single currency for the region.
This was the consensus view of members of the Technical Meeting of ECOWAS Macroeconomic Policy Committee on Multilateral Surveillance, during a two-day technical meeting in Abuja yesterday..
Out-going chairman of the committee, Ommy Sar Ndaiye, who noted that the commission had made remarkable progress in its macroeconomic policies, urged the committee to chart the way forward for the economy of member states.
She said the depreciation of the value of the naira and other economic challenges facing member states were affecting the economy of the entire region and also the plans for the adoption of a single currency in the region.
“The depreciation in value of the Naira and other economic factors in Nigeria are affecting ECOWAS. We all know that whatever happens in Nigeria weighs heavily on our economies. If there are challenges there, it would reflect on the region,” she said.
She urged the committee members to look inward and find better ways to strengthen economic ties within the region.
In his remarks, Commissioner of ECOWAS Macroeconomic Policy and Economic Research, Mamadou Traore, while stating that the aim of the session was to take a look at the 2015 report, monitor, evaluate and make appropriate recommendations that would help revive the economy of member states, lamented that “despite efforts by the commission to strengthen the economy of ECOWAS, the economy is still vulnerable to external shocks.”
He urged member states to update their database on a regular basis on measures that would drive economic growth and also furnish same to the commission for proper information.

  41. Cancer cases around the world have increased by 33 percent between 2005 and 2015, mostly due to population aging and growth, claims a new American research.

According to a new report from the Global Burden of Disease Cancer Collaboration published online by JAMA Oncology, there were an estimated 17.5 million cancer cases around the globe and 8.7 million deaths, in 2015. Cancer is the second leading cause of death worldwide and estimates of its burden around the globe are vital for cancer control planning. The report by Christina Fitzmaurice, MD, MPH, of the University of Washington, Seattle and co-authors estimated cancer deaths using vital registration system data, cancer registry incidence data and verbal autopsy data. Among the report’s key findings were that globally, the odds of developing cancer during a lifetime were one in three for men and one in four for women. The study suggested that prostate cancer was the most common.
